Kurt – Le Mans (March 2011)

On the Grid at Le Mans

Le Mans

We arrived at lemans on the Thursday and seeing the track and other teams was great because of all the years I have wanted to race at such a famous track.

On the Friday we had two practice sessions, which gave us the chance to get used to the fast speeds of the track and complete any final settings on the bike.  It was so much better racing bikes with similar speed. During the practice day I knocked 12 seconds off my lap time, which was a great improvement. On the Friday I walked the track with the other riders and the team boss Stephanie, this was great because he helped to improve my lap times even more.

On the Saturday there were two 30 minutes qualifying where I gained 26th on the grid.  I was pleased that I was qualified infront of 3 rows, which was great as there was so much pressure because our lap time must be 15% of the leaders.  In the second session Stephanie and the other mechanics helped by setting up the bike to suit the big and fast track.

On the Sunday we didn’t ride in the 10 minutes warm up because it was heavily raining and we had no wet tyres.  Thankfully the weather picked up for our race completely drying the track, which made me feel much better and confident.  It was great being on the FFM grid, it was an amazing feeling waiting for the race to start. The first bend is very rough with other racers piling up for the first bend.  After having a bad start and working my way through some riders a red flag caused the race to be stopped.  In the re-start  I had a much better start setting my personal best lap time and finishing the race in 15th position in my category.
